Behind the warm counter, Nell held her pizza slice with both hands and watched dough whoosh above the brick oven. She wanted to ask for one tiny toss, but the fire crackled pop-pop, and her voice stayed smaller than a sprinkle.
Then her spoon tapped something in the flour bowl. Clink! Under the soft white flour was a folded note that smelled like yeast: “When the first helper is brave, toss the dough toward the clock.” Nell whispered, “May I try?” The cook smiled and lifted the dough with her.
