Under the striped awning of the Doodle Bazaar, a yellow ribbon lay curled in Junie’s pocket, soft from years of being tied around her lunch box. She wanted to bring it to the Smile Booth, where a paper daisy stamped grins on anything plain. If the daisy wore her ribbon, Junie was sure the whole bazaar would feel the happy thump in her chest.
She stepped past the cozy cushion stall and into aisles that smelled like sugar chalk and fresh paper. At the heart booth, a vendor needed one strip to mend a gingham heart. Snip. At the cloud cart, a tiny bow had come undone. Snip. Near the lightning stand, sparks crackled too loudly, so Junie tied another piece around the jar to hush them. Snip. By the time she reached the Smile Booth, only a small yellow tail remained.
The daisy stamped it gently, then pressed one grin onto a cloud, one onto a heart, one onto Junie’s hand. All around the bazaar, her ribbon bits fluttered back as bows, borders, and sunny stripes. The joy was too big for one pocket now. Next time you spot the wavy ribbons, can you guess which tiny piece came from Junie’s pocket?
