🎨 How to color it

Color the robot’s pumpkin head bright orange, its metal body soft silver, the crooked castle violet-gray, and the bats deep indigo. Use sharp colored pencils for the gear joints, candy pieces, and spiral tree curls, then switch to markers for the big pumpkin panels and open hills. Try a cool blue night sky behind the warm orange pumpkins so the robot’s jack-o-lantern grin glows like a tiny lantern.

Past the curly thistle gate, Pax clicked one foot, then the other, toward the hilltop bowl of moon-mints. He had watched the older bots take the haunted lane all week, and tonight his own candy pail swung empty at his side, tap-tap, tap-tap. The air smelled like dry leaves and cold tin. At the first bend, a bat dropped from a branch and landed with a sound like folded paper.

“I can’t find the bell tower,” the bat squeaked, trembling so hard his ears blurred. Pax wanted to hurry; the moon-mints might be gone. Still, he lifted his pumpkin pail, where one little bulb glowed amber through the carved smile. The bat tucked close to the light, and together they followed the pale road past whispering grass, past stone windows, past stars sharp as sugar.

At the tower, the bat’s family fluttered down in a soft black cloud. They gave Pax the last moon-mint, wrapped in silver paper, but Pax kept listening to their wings. On the way home, his steps sounded steadier: tap-tap, tap-tap. If you trace the winding road with your finger, can you hear who is brave enough to walk it now?
