🎨 How to color it

Color the surfer’s rash guard coral pink, her flower clip sunny yellow, the star-covered board turquoise, and the curling wave bright ocean blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the many thin water streaks, starting near the surfer and working outward through the big curl. Try fading the sky from pale peach around the spiky sun to soft blue behind the clouds so the wave feels extra tall.

By the striped lighthouse, Zara tapped seven shells into a row and promised herself she would ride the seventh curl before lunch. The first six waves slapped the rocks with ordinary hush-hush sounds, but each left a cold sparkle on her toes and a salty sting in her eyes. On the seventh, she paddled past the safe sandbar, where the water turned glass green and the air smelled like wet stone.

The wave lifted her higher than the palms. Inside its curling wall, Zara heard a tiny clang, not from the lighthouse, but from under her own board. A loose star sticker had peeled up, revealing a brass bead trapped in the wood, ringing whenever the water wrapped around it. “So that’s your secret,” she whispered, and let the wave carry her home.

Back on the beach, Zara kept the bead in place and waited for the next hush-hush set. If you follow the star on her board, you might guess where the seventh curl first began to sing.
