Under the dune grass, Sable pressed one flipper into cool sand and made a mark shaped like a tiny fan. She wanted to reach the first white foam before the sun lifted clear of the water, but she had just invented a game: every ten scoots, leave the neatest print possible. The beach smelled of salt and dry reeds. Scritch, pat, scoot. Her marks curved away from the nest like a secret ribbon.
Halfway down, a gull’s shadow slid over the sand. Sable tucked still as a pebble, losing three careful turns while the wind hissed through the grass. When the shadow passed, the tide had blurred part of her trail. Her chest felt heavy, but she pressed harder, carving each new print deep and clear. “Follow my fans,” she whispered.
At the foam’s edge, cold water fizzed around her flippers. Sable looked back and saw other hatchlings using her handmade ribbon to cross the bright sand. She had brought them something better than speed: a path made by her own small feet. Next time you see the trail of fan-shaped prints, can you find where Sable’s game began under the dune grass?
