At the foot of Gullcap Light, Kestrel hopped from rock to rock with salt drying on her knees and one challenge fizzing in her chest: she would shout a happy word so loudly the far sailboat would hear it. The wind snapped at the beach grass. Waves boomed against the black rocks—WHUMP, rush, hiss—and Kestrel cupped her hands. “Hooray!” she cried, but the sea tossed her voice into silver spray.
She tried again from the cottage step, then from the tallest safe boulder beside the tower. Each time, her shout vanished into gull cries and foamy thunder. Still, the trying felt grand. Kestrel laughed so hard she had to share that too, sending it out in bright bursts: “Ha! Ha! Hooray!” Two gulls tilted their heads, as if they were listening with their whole bodies.
Then one gull lifted off and cried, “Kree-yoray!” Another answered, “Ha-ree!” The calls leapt from bird to bird, out over the water, until the tiny sailboat dipped its sail twice in reply. Kestrel flung both arms wide. Next time you see the gulls on the rocks, can you tell which one is still carrying her hooray?
