🎨 How to color it

Color the striped beach shade in turquoise and coral, the palm fronds in bright green, the toy sailboat in red and white, and the smiling sun in golden yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the many small shells, footprints, wave lines, and sandcastle blocks, then switch to broader strokes for the open water and sky. Try making the ocean fade from pale aqua near the shore to deep blue at the horizon, so the little boat looks as if it has somewhere far to go.

Every afternoon, when the sun warmed the sand like toasted bread, Kiran set his paper sailboat in the skinny tide channel and tried to send it past his sandcastle harbor. Every afternoon, the boat tipped, spun, and bumped back against his knees. He wanted one clean voyage before the grown-ups folded the shade and called everyone home.

Until one day, a moon snail rose beside the castle wall, carrying a shell so white it seemed to hold a piece of cloud. “Wait for the quiet wave,” it said, in a voice like fizzing foam. Because of that, Kiran kept his hands still while his little sister scooped wet sand and his cousin laughed from the shallows. Because of that, he noticed the waves came in threes: splash, slap, hush.

At the hush, Kiran set the boat down. It slid through the channel, past the shell gate, and out toward the glittering water without tipping once. The moon snail sank with a silver wink. If you can spot the sailboat near the waves, you may find the quiet wave still carrying it past the sand like toasted bread.
