🎨 How to color it

Color the jack-o'-lantern a bright pumpkin orange, the corn stalks golden yellow and olive green, the barn cranberry red, and the drifting leaves russet, amber, and brown. Use sharp colored pencils for the many leaf veins, vine curls, corn kernels, and pumpkin ridges, saving broader marker strokes for the barn roof and open sky. Try making the center pumpkin glow with yellow-orange around its carved eyes and smile, then keep the far hills cooler in blue-green so the grin feels secretly lit.

Behind the corn wall, where dry leaves clicked like tiny bones, Tucker kept his challenge to himself: count thirteen leaf-whirls before the moon cleared the silo. Twelve had spun past his carved grin. For the thirteenth, he had to leave the soft tangle of his own vines and roll toward the hill path, where the wind smelled of cold hay and dusty pumpkin skin.

He bumped over roots, lost one curly tendril to a fence splinter, and nearly swallowed a burr. Then the last leaf rose—not one whirl, but a whole secret flock, circling the barn roof as if the sky had opened a drawer. “Thirteen and more,” Tucker whispered. He carried back a rustle caught inside his hollow middle, better than any number.

By moonrise, his grin glowed wider, and whenever the corn shivered, he knew which gust was coming next. If you can spot the leaf nearest his smile, maybe it is still telling him the secret.
