Under the low hum of the relay room, Orin slid paper squares across the glowing Earth screen. His new game was simple: each time the satellite’s shadow crossed a coast, he whispered a pretend message into the microphone and gave himself one point. He wanted to beat his own score before the night crew returned.
Then the screen blinked over a blank white stretch near the top of the world. No towns. No ships. Just ice-blue static hissing like snow against a window. Orin should have skipped it, but he sent his last spare signal anyway. “For whoever is listening,” he said. The battery meter dropped to one red bar.
A minute later, three soft beeps answered. An old weather buoy, trapped in polar ice, had caught the signal and unlocked its stored storm warnings for every ship below. Orin never wrote his point total down. He tucked the paper squares away and smiled at the low hum of the relay room, where a silent game had found someone listening.
