🎨 How to color it

Color the pilot’s jacket cherry red, her leather flight helmet cocoa brown, the goggles silver with pale blue lenses, and the cockpit dials soft gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the zipper, wing badge, gauges, and goggle straps so the small details stay crisp. Try a sunrise blend outside the windows—peach near the clouds fading into sky blue—to make her red jacket pop.

Under the hangar’s tin roof, Odette rubbed a strip of cedar until it shone smooth as toast crust. She wanted a windkey for her little plane’s dashboard: a tiny whistle that would sing when the air was ready for a turn. Sawdust tickled her nose, and her file went skritch-skritch along the edge. By morning, she had tied on a copper thread, painted two neat wings, and clicked the windkey beside the round dials.

Up she zoomed, past cottony clouds bright with lemon-colored sun. The cockpit hummed under her boots. When Odette opened the vent, her windkey gave one brave peep, then a second note that curled like a ribbon. “That’s mine,” she whispered, grinning so hard her cheeks hurt.

A blue paper airplane drifted through the open side window and unfolded itself into a tiny sky-map, all dotted lines and cloud swirls. A voice from the paper said, “Thank you for the new compass.” Odette laughed as the whistle’s notes nudged the clouds into a shining arrow toward home. Next time you spot her goggles and that proud smile, can you hear the cedar windkey going skritch-peep, skritch-peep?
