Every Saturday, Liora arrived at the brick porch with three rules: knock twice, hug Grandma first, and never let her little brother Nico touch the porch bell. The bell made a bright ding-ding that echoed past the rocking chair and into Grandpa’s hanging flowers. Liora liked the routine neat as the porch boards under her shoes—until one day, a goose waddled up the steps wearing a red bottle cap on a string like a medal.
Because of that, Nico saluted it. Because of THAT, the goose honked so loudly the curtains jumped in the tall windows, then marched straight to Grandma’s flowerpot and sat in it like a mayor. “Nobody blink,” Grandpa whispered, grinning. The porch smelled like damp soil and petunias while Liora tried to offer the goose a cracker, but it stole her folded rule list instead and flapped it behind the rocking chair.
At last Grandma laughed, opened both arms, and said the porch clearly needed new rules. Liora squeezed in beside Nico and Grandpa, warm sweater sleeves all around her, while the goose guarded the flowerpot. From then on, the first rule was hugs; the second was crackers; the third was to check the porch for officials with feathers—can you spot where the mayor would hold court next Saturday?
