Under the tickly stems of blossom meadow, Nollie carried roses for the very first Friend Bell. He wanted to ring it, just once, but the bell rope hung beside a crowd of beetles, bees, and bold little wrens. His boots made a tiny scritch-scritch in the grass.
Then a loose rose petal landed on his plain hat and whispered, “I can help.” Nollie gulped. He pressed the petal flat. It left a heart mark. Another petal fluttered down, then another, until his hat wore hearts from brim to tip.
The meadow grew quiet. Nollie stepped up and rang the bell—ding! Ever since, gnomes wear heart hats when they are brave for the first time, and if you peek at Nollie’s hat, you’ll know which petal whispered first.
