🎨 How to color it

Color the treehouse boards honey brown, the big tree trunks warm tan, the leafy canopy two shades of summer green, and the picket fence clean white. Use sharp colored pencils for the many wood-grain lines and leaf edges, then fill the open lawn and path with smooth, lighter strokes. Add a secret sunset glow in the treehouse doorway, as if something handmade is waiting inside.

The story behind this coloring page

The Door Under the Floor — Under the coolest branch in the yard, Quill rubbed sandpaper over a pine board until it smelled like toast. Read the full story →

Under the coolest branch in the yard, Quill rubbed sandpaper over a pine board until it smelled like toast. He wanted the treehouse to have a sign he had carved himself, not one from a store. The last screw was missing, so he tucked the board under his arm and climbed the rope ladder, rung by creaky rung, leaving his shady bench and lemonade below.

At the top, the air felt warmer and full of leaf-whispers. Quill paid for the climb with one splinter in his thumb and two wobbly knees, but he pushed open the little doorway. When he set the sign down, a floorboard gave a soft knock-knock back. “That’s not a floor sound,” he whispered.

He pried up the loose board with his screwdriver. Under it lay a tiny tin box nobody had thought to look for, holding a rusty screw, a pencil stub, and a note: MAKE SOMETHING, THEN LEAVE SOMETHING. Quill used the screw to hang his sign, then slipped in his own smooth wood shaving for the next builder. If you follow the ladder with your eyes, you might feel the knock-knock of the door under the floor.
