Under the striped umbrella, Tessa lined up her flip-flops, tucked her sunglasses on the towel, and whispered, “Operation Sneaky Nice begins.” The beach smelled like salt and coconut lotion, and the waves made a shush-shush sound as her cousins splashed nearby. While nobody watched, she pushed a loose shell away from the walking path, patted a wobbling sandcastle tower back into shape, and left the best purple shell beside the bucket for whoever needed a treasure.
The afternoon grew bright enough to make the sand glitter. Gulls squawked overhead like they were laughing at a joke they refused to share. Tessa crawled under the umbrella for a sip of warm lemonade and noticed the shadow had a funny checkerboard shape from the striped top. In one dark square, half-buried where no one ever looked, was a tiny folded note sealed with a sticker shaped like a crab.
Inside, in her little brother’s crooked letters, it said: THANKS FOR FIXING MY CASTLE. I HID YOU A COOKIE. The cookie was in the sunglasses case, sandy at one corner and perfect anyway. Tessa split it into four pieces before anyone asked. Next time you spot that umbrella’s crisscross shade, check the darkest square—mischief may be saving you a snack.
