Among the tulip hills, Elian pressed his ear to a closed bud and invented the Waiting-Wind Game: no running, no shouting, only listening until a flower made the first move. The grass smelled wet and sweet. A bee hummed by like a tiny fiddle, and a butterfly’s wings flickered with soft papery taps. Elian wanted to know which tulip would open next, but every bud kept its secrets tucked tight.
He waited while the sun warmed his sleeves. He waited while little clouds slid over the hill. At last, a breeze curled through the leaves, slow as a yawn. One tulip nodded, then another, and their petals loosened with a silky sigh. “Your turn,” Elian whispered.
Ever since that day, the wind has played the Waiting-Wind Game with tulips, never hurrying them, only circling gently until each one is ready. Next time you see the swirls around the blossoms, can you tell which patient flower just answered?
