🎨 How to color it

Color the ice cream scoop creamy vanilla, the bubbling soda root beer brown, the striped straw cherry red and white, and the counter stools teal. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny bubbles, bottle labels, and fluted glass lines, then switch to smooth marker strokes for the broad counter and shelves. Try a pale blue shadow inside the glass so the vanilla scoop and foamy rim look extra cold against the busy soda-fountain background.

Every evening after sweeping the soda fountain’s black-and-white floor, Aster lined up clean glasses and tapped each rim with a spoon: ping, ping, ping. He wanted to invent a game no one had played before, one that belonged to his hands, his pencil, and the smell of vanilla melting into root beer.

Until one day, the biggest fluted glass on the counter fizzed before he poured a drop. Because of that, Aster set a striped straw like a goalpost and made a rule: each bubble that reached the foam earned one stripe. Because of that, the long spoon became the moon, stirring slow circles while bottles on the shelf flashed amber in the evening light.

The bubbles rose too fast to count, so Aster changed the game: whoever named the quietest bubble won. “That one,” he whispered, pointing to a tiny pearl clinging near the glass. At last, he wrote the rules on a napkin, sticky with syrup and proud thumbprints. Next time you see the straw leaning through the foam, can you spot the quietest bubble still keeping score: ping, ping, ping?
