The chapel bell went bong over the windy hill, and Dex slapped one hand on the wooden gate. He had set himself a Thanksgiving challenge: run from the fence to the chapel steps before the last echo faded. Gravel popped under his shoes. Dry maple leaves skittered like tiny crabs. “Ready, bell?” he called, and the rope inside the tower gave another bronze-throated bong.
Up the path he flew past pumpkins, corn bundles, and baskets that smelled of apples and damp straw. The echo rolled toward the distant barn, then slipped between the two big maples. Dex reached the steps, breath puffing, just as a second sound came back—not an echo, but a soft clank from the barn lane, then another from the orchard side, and a third from somewhere behind the hills.
He laughed so hard he nearly missed the next bong. Every farm bell was answering the chapel, passing the sound around the valley like a secret race. Dex stood beneath the wreath on the door and let curiosity run farther than his feet. Next time you spot the winding road beyond the fence, listen for that last small bong over the windy hill.
