🎨 How to color it

Color the turkey golden brown, the mashed potatoes buttery cream, the cranberry-topped side deep burgundy, the pumpkins harvest orange, and the oak leaves russet and gold. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny acorns, berries, and dotted border, then switch to broader strokes for the plate sections and pumpkin panels. Try a soft blue-gray shadow inside the scalloped ring so the warm feast colors look extra cozy.

In the pantry hall, Orla rubbed a plain pewter button between her fingers and watched steam curl from the harvest dishes. She needed to carry the first plate to the long table before the bell rang, but the old plate in front of her had no edge at all, smooth as a pond. One bump, and the turkey, bread, berries, and sweet noodles would slide away. The button had belonged to her mother’s apron, and Orla pressed it to the plate, whispering, “Please hold.”

Nothing happened. The bell gave one low bong. Orla waited anyway, breathing in sage, butter, and baked pumpkin. At the second bong, the button warmed. Around the plate’s rim, little waves rose one by one, gentle as tucked blankets. Acorns clicked from the rafters; oak leaves settled in a circle as if they had always known the pattern.

Orla carried the plate without spilling a crumb. Ever since that evening, feast plates have kept scalloped rims, patient little waves that remember how long good things can wait.
