Under the biggest tree on the hillside, Juno rolled out from the roots and invented a game called Odd Apple Rule. The rules were simple: all the red apples had to sit still, all the leaves had to flutter, and Juno had to become the one apple nobody expected. The grass tickled his stem. The basket creaked nearby, packed with shiny show-offs.
He scooted into a patch of shade and whispered, “Don’t tell.” A dry leaf skittered past with a papery chuckle. Then another leaf landed beside him, pointing its stem toward the far farm rows. In those rows, every furrow made stripes like a giant game board, and the little barn door looked exactly like a square waiting to be chosen.
That was when Juno noticed the sun was playing too. Its beams touched one apple in the basket, one apple on a branch, and one small apple by the roots—him. For the first time, he didn’t roll away. If you find the apple brave enough to be odd, the hillside may let you join the next round.
