🎨 How to color it

Give the hero’s suit a deep cobalt blue, the cape a rich crimson, the pedestal a polished sandstone, and the art deco towers cool silver-gray. Use sharp pencils for the many straight skyline rays and building stripes, pulling each line of color outward from the hero to keep the symmetry crisp. For a mischievous twist, hide tiny gold highlights in the pedestal grooves and make the sunburst fade from pale lemon near his shoulders to midnight navy at the page edges.

At seven sharp, Garrick stood on the new marble pedestal while the boulevard below smelled of rain on warm stone and brass polish. His cape lifted in the river breeze; the skyscrapers answered with neat gold windows. He had planned one dignified salute before the city’s evening bell, then a brisk escape before anyone asked him to cut another ribbon.

The bell rang. A pigeon landed on the plaque, pecked twice, and the pedestal gave a polite little click. From a slit no architect had mentioned slid a narrow drawer packed with subway tokens, theater stubs, gum wrappers folded into hearts, and three dollars in dimes. On top was a note in a child’s blocky hand: FOR PEOPLE WHO FORGOT LUNCH. Garrick, who had secretly been leaving coins in coat pockets all month, stared as if the marble had winked.

He did not salute. He swept his cape around the drawer, bowed gravely to the pigeon, and began sorting dimes into the fountain cups before the crowd looked up from their umbrellas. By nightfall, nobody knew why the soup cart served everyone twice, only that Garrick’s dignified escape smelled faintly of tomato broth, brass polish, and rain on warm stone.
