🎨 How to color it

Layer the center pumpkin in burnt orange and copper, the three candle columns in warm ivory and gold, the wheat fans in ocher, and the oak leaves in deep russet. Use sharp colored pencils for the chevrons, stepped panels, and tiny wheat kernels, coloring each repeated shape before moving to the next. Try a pale turquoise or smoky violet background behind the candle rays so the warm harvest centerpiece feels lit from within.

In the harvest alcove, Callan polished a plain brass snuffer until it held the amber blur of pumpkins, wheat, and three unlit candles. He had set the snuffer beside the center candle every Thanksgiving since he was small, waiting for the hour when the first flame made the room smell faintly of wax, dust, and cinnamon stems. No one used it; no one asked why he kept it there. Still, he waited, listening to the soft tick of cooling window glass.

The candles were lit one by one. Their rays spread over carved steps and chevrons, over wheat heads leaning like listening birds. Then the brass snuffer answered—not with sound, but with three tiny reflected flames where only one should have been. Callan lifted it and saw, in its curved bowl, the hidden pattern: the candles, pumpkins, and grain aligned into a small sun, visible only from his patient place at the table.

He did not snuff the flames. He set the brass back down, and the alcove kept glowing, amber within amber, as if the waiting itself had been the wick.
