Under the striped awning of the market lane, Liora tapped her great-aunt’s tiny cinnamon scoop against a warm cup. Clink, clink. She wanted to make one drink smell exactly like the old family cart: apple steam, toasted sugar, and a peppery tickle that made customers lean closer. But the scoop held only three brown grains, and the wind kept nosing under the awning.

The grains hopped out. Liora chased them past crates of squash and a sleepy basket of acorns. Each speck landed on something thankful: a baker’s mitten, a fiddler’s bow, a folded note beside the cider barrel. Wherever they touched, a little round glow rose into the air, smelling of cinnamon and warm leaves.

“Come back, please,” Liora whispered. The glowing dots drifted over her cup and settled around its creamy top, not sinking at all. The drink tasted like every kind hand in the lane.
