🎨 How to color it

Give the giant turkey balloon warm chestnut feathers, a golden pilgrim hat buckle, orange pumpkins on the float, and red-and-blue parade banners. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny windows, uniforms, and float patterns, then switch to markers for the turkey’s big rounded body and tail feathers. Try a sunrise gradient behind the star balloons so the strings, rooftops, and marching band still stand out clearly.

Three blocks before the big turn, Calla tied a tiny ribbon to her mitten and whispered her challenge: gather three sounds of thanks before the turkey balloon reached Maple Street. The avenue smelled of roasted nuts and cold pavement. Above her, the huge balloon tugged its ropes with a soft squeak-squeak, smiling as if it already knew the song.

Calla stepped away from her warm rope team and followed the parade edge. She traded her last caramel corn for a drummer’s spare jingle, caught the brass band’s low oom-pah in her pocket recorder, and waited while a little boy showed her how his star balloon hummed in the wind. Her fingers stung, but the three sounds fit together like mittens.

When she ran back, the turkey balloon had paused above the harvest float, rocking in the hush before the crowd cheered. Calla lifted the jingle, pressed play, and rang the beat. People clapped, horns joined, and the joy grew too large for one pocket. Next time you spot the big smiling turkey overhead, listen for squeak-squeak under the song.
