🎨 How to color it

Color the turkey’s feathers golden brown, the number 77 jersey cranberry red, the helmet cream white, and the football rich chestnut. Use sharp colored pencils around the feather bands, jersey numbers, shoe cleats, and chain-link fence so those small shapes stay crisp. Try a cool blue-gray porch and pale windy sky so the red jersey and tumbling orange leaves feel extra lively.

Behind the porch rail, where the house smelled like sage and warm rolls, Dashi tucked a tiny note into his football seam. He had invented the Quiet Quarterback Game: carry one dinner wish across the yard, leave it where someone needed it, and never, ever tell. His wish was for Aunt Rhea’s missing bread basket to come back full.

The wind hissed through the bare tree. Dashi sprinted from the porch, cleats biting cold grass, while leaves slapped his helmet like nosy little hands. Halfway to the fence, a gust stole the note and spun it toward the muddy hedge. “No whistle,” he whispered. He dove, lost one shiny tail feather, and caught the note under his wing.

By the kitchen door, the empty basket waited. Dashi dropped in the note, then added the last roll from his own snack cloth. When the cousins found the basket later, nobody knew who had started the game—but two more rolls, a cinnamon apple, and a paper crown appeared before supper. Next time wind skates leaves across a backyard, see if you can spot the player who gave up one shiny feather.
