🎨 How to color it

Give the smiling cloud a soft pearl gray, the rainbow bright bands of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet, the lightning bolt lemon yellow, and the puddles pale sky blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the skinny raindrops and zigzag bolt, then switch to broader strokes for the rainbow’s long curved bands. For a mischievous twist, make tiny yellow reflections in the puddles where the lightning touches the water.

All afternoon, under the rubbery smell of wet reeds, Nico held a tin cup to the largest puddle and listened. Plink, plunk, plip went the rain, tapping little rings across the mud flats. Nico wanted the storm’s funniest sound, the one the older puddle listeners bragged about but never repeated. “It only speaks after you stop asking,” said a fat cloud, smiling far too sweetly.

So Nico waited. He counted seven rainbow stripes stretching over the far bank, then counted the crooked flash that poked the puddle like a bright elbow. The thunder did not boom. It went prrrt-bloop, as if a giant had stepped in soup and tried to look innocent.

Nico laughed so hard the tin cup rolled away. In its shiny bottom, hidden where nobody thought to look, a tiny upside-down rainbow winked back. Next time you see that jagged bolt touching the puddle, check the cup-shaped ripples—the storm may still be holding in another prrrt-bloop.
