Behind the warm bakery curtain, Rufus patted pumpkin filling with one careful paw. He wanted his first handmade Thanksgiving pie to look ready before the leaf-bell chimed. Tap, tap, pat. The crust felt bumpy and good, but the middle looked plain.
“Needs something soft,” Rufus whispered. He peeked in the sugar bowl, then under the spoon. Nothing. At last he lifted the cooling plate, where nobody ever looked, and found a snowy puff of cream hiding in a tiny cup. Rufus twirled it high with his paw. Ever since then, pumpkin pie has worn a little cloud on top; next time you see that swirl, you’ll know Rufus found it first.
