At the quiet beach, Pippa set her summer bag in the warm sand and whispered, “Twenty rays before we go.” She tucked the cool sunscreen beside the pail, slid her sunglasses on the front pocket, and counted each golden stripe spreading from the low sun. One ray touched the water. Another shivered on her hat ribbon. The waves made a soft shush-shush, as if they were counting too.
By ray nineteen, the whole shore had turned honey-colored. Then Pippa noticed three shells near her toes, glowing one after another: pale pink, pearly white, sandy gold. They were not waiting to be collected. They were counting the light back to the sea. Pippa waited for the twentieth ray to reach them, then zipped nothing, hurried nowhere, and let the bag stand tall in the warm sand. Next time you see those shells, can you guess which one saved the last ray?
