🎨 How to color it

Color the horse chestnut brown with a black braided mane, the carriage rich lavender with gold scrollwork, and the distant castle towers pale stone gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny curls, wheel spokes, harness buckles, and window curtains, saving broader marker strokes for the horse’s body and the carriage panels. Try a sunset fade behind the two castles so the hanging lanterns can glow with little rings of warm yellow.

Before the evening bells, Caspian clipped along the ridge road with a bundle of blue palace curtains tucked in the royal carriage. He wanted to reach the domed hall before the windows turned dark. His harness bells made a soft ching-ching, and the castle stones smelled cool after rain.

At the bend between the two castles, something brushed his ear. A gray moth, powdery as ash, fluttered beside the carriage lamp. “Please,” it whispered, “my family follows warm light, but the wind has blown our moon-path apart.” Caspian looked at the lamp oil meant to shine for the palace gate. No driver watched. No trumpets sounded. He lowered his nose, nudged the wick loose, and let one golden drop soak into the moth’s tiny thread.

The moth flew ahead, glowing like a crumb of sunrise. Then another spark appeared, and another, until the whole carriage wore gentle lights along its sides. Caspian delivered the curtains late, but the dark windows opened to the softest glow anyone had seen. Ever since, royal carriages carry lanterns for travelers too small to thank them; can you find the first one Caspian shared, still shining near the ridge road?
