🎨 How to color it

Color the capybara a warm chestnut brown, the lily pads deep green, the water lilies soft pink and white, and the cattails golden tan. Use colored pencils for the capybara’s short fur strokes and the thin ripple lines, then switch to broader, lighter strokes for the open water. Try making the pond shift from pale turquoise near the capybara to a cooler blue around the far lily pads.

Across the lotus pond, Nico paddled slowly with a bright patch of sun resting on his whiskers. He wanted to carry that warm gold to the shaded lilies before the clouds tucked it away. Water slid along his sides with a silky hush, and cattails clicked together like tiny wooden spoons. Each lily he passed opened a little wider, as if listening.

Nico drifted past round leaves, pink blossoms, and ripples that spread in soft rings. He breathed in the green smell of reeds and the sweet mud below. When the sunbeam slipped from his nose to the water, he whispered, “Wait for me.” The golden patch trembled, broke into sparkles, and floated ahead of him.

Then a second capybara appeared beneath him—not swimming, not breathing, only shining. It blinked when Nico blinked. It smiled when Nico smiled. Nico stared, wonder filling him so full he could hardly paddle. The pond had been carrying the sun, too, in its own quiet way.

Nico turned toward the lilies and made one wide circle, sharing the glitter with every leaf and blossom. If you follow the ripples around him, you may find the place where one bright patch of sun became enough for the whole pond.
