Behind the blue curtains of the Listening Room, Pippa lined up six chalk cups and tapped the floor tiles with her sneaker: tick, tick, tick. The heart chart already had happy, sad, angry, scared, confused, and calm, but she wanted to find the seventh feeling before the afternoon bell. Outside, leaves scraped the window like paper boats, and the little plant on the bookcase smelled damp from watering.
Ms. Vale only smiled and opened one hand toward the chart. “Give it a minute.” Pippa watched the faces. Happy grinned. Sad drooped. Angry pinched tight. Nothing new arrived. She counted the stripes in the curtains, the HELP and GROW books, the fringe on the chair blanket. Waiting felt like holding a hummingbird without closing her fingers.
Then a tiny click came from the bulletin board. A ladybug, red as a dropped jellybean, marched across a pinned flower drawing and stopped beside the chart. Its wings opened in a bright, secret wink. Pippa laughed so fast her chalk squeaked. The seventh feeling was not hiding in the chart at all; it had crawled in when the room grew quiet enough to notice.
She drew a small winking heart near the bottom and wrote: surprised. The bell rang, shiny and loud, but Pippa stayed long enough to tap one last tile—tick—and next time you see the curtain, see if the tiny visitor is still waiting for its wink.
