Every day, Quinn sorted boxes at the depot by street name, scanner beep, tape rip, wheels rumble. She wanted to finish her first solo route with every package on the right step before the ice cream truck’s song reached Maple Bend. But one address had no number, only two identical white houses and a van clock blinking 4:17. Quinn’s hand hovered over the radio. “Not yet,” she whispered, feeling the box corners press into her palms.
Then the wind flipped a porch mat with a dusty slap. Under it, where nobody thought to look, was a tiny chalk map: three squares, a star, and the words SIDE GATE. Because of that, Quinn followed the hedge instead of the sidewalk. Because of that, she heard frantic peeping behind a gate, smelled warm cedar chips, and found a pet carrier waiting in the shade with the same star sticker as the package label.
Quinn set the box down, knocked twice, and waved as the door flew open to cheers and a chorus of birdlike squeaks. Finally, the scanner chirped delivered, the ice cream song drifted closer, and Quinn grinned at the taped box in her arms. Next time you spot the waving driver, can you guess which porch hid the dusty little map?
