Every afternoon, Quilla waddled along the rain garden path, tapping her blue boots in the same plip-plop beat under her red umbrella. She wanted the drainpipe band to let her march at the front, but her steps kept slipping into muddy squeaks. Then one day, a striped beetle burst from a tulip cup, banging a seedpod drum. “Make room for the thunder bug!” he shouted, and rolled straight toward the biggest puddle.
Because of that, Quilla chased him past the daisies, splashing so hard the puddle answered slap-slap-splash. Because of that, the drainpipes rattled along, the flowers bobbed, and Quilla’s boots found the wildest, happiest rhythm. At last she planted both feet, lifted her umbrella high, and led beetle, rain, and garden in one bright parade. If you spot her puddle again, can you hear the plip-plop beat?
