Every morning before the gulls finished yelling over the gravel plant, Ivo rolled under the tall chute and tried his private challenge: stop with his empty bed exactly where the first stones would fall. He liked the clank-clank of the conveyor and the peppery smell of rock dust. “Perfect load today,” he whispered, tapping his brakes once for luck.
Until one day, the belt hiccuped. Because of that, only three pebbles plinked into his bed. Because of that, Ivo waited while a lizard sunbathed on the control box, a foreman sneezed into his hard hat, and a pile of gravel slid down with a sound like a giant potato chip bag. Other trucks honked, but Ivo held still, even when a beetle marched across his tire like it owned the road.
At last the chute rattled awake and poured a neat, shining heap right into the center of his bed—not too much, not too little. Ivo rolled away slowly, proud as a parade float, while three pebbles bounced on top like applause. Next time you spot the empty space beneath the chute, imagine the clank-clank and Ivo tapping his brakes once for luck.
