🎨 How to color it

Color the oceans turquoise blue, the mountain peaks cool gray with snowy white tips, the forests pine green, and the smiling sun golden yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny trees, coastlines, waves, and mountain ridges, then switch to lighter pressure on the wide ocean spaces. Try making the left sky glow pale morning blue while the moon side fades into soft violet, so both day and night fit inside the same circle.

Behind the atlas cabinet, where the paper smelled like dust and sea salt, Vesper invented a game called Slowest Race. The rule was deliciously secret: carry one silver shell from the western ship to the eastern ship, but only move when something on the world chart seemed to breathe. Vesper wanted the shell delivered before the librarian’s bell, so waiting felt like paying with minutes.

First, the clouds puffed. Then a river line glittered. A dolphin’s curved back seemed to lift from the blue-white paper with a tiny splash in Vesper’s ear. Step by step, Vesper crossed forests no bigger than crumbs and mountains sharp as broken sugar. “Not yet,” Vesper whispered whenever the path went still.

At last, the moon rose beside the stars, and the eastern ship waited. Vesper set down the shell and found it had gathered a fine dust of gold from every patient stop. If you study the winding river between the mountains, you might catch the secret rule beginning again: move only when the world seems to breathe.
