🎨 How to color it

Layer chestnut brown and soft umber over the mushroom caps, use creamy ivory on the stems and gills, and give the oak, maple, and fern leaves muted olive, copper, and russet tones. Use sharp pencils on the engraving-style crosshatching, following the cap curves and leaf veins so the printed texture stays crisp. Try leaving the brightest cap centers nearly white while deepening the undersides with cool gray-violet for a quiet forest-floor glow.

Before dawn, Elden set a new rule for his measuring game: he would wait until one drop slid from oak to fern to cap, then mark the exact hush between them with a pale twig. The cluster around him smelled of wet bark and peppery leaf mold. But the only straight twig lay beyond the curled maple leaves, where the ground sank cold underfoot. Elden went anyway, losing a small flake from his cap to a thorny stem and hearing the slow tick of water in the dark.

At the fern rib, he lifted the twig and turned back, but the rain had stopped. No drop came. The forest held its breath so long that the underside of every leaf shone silver. Elden waited past his game, past wanting to win it, until a single bead gathered, trembled, and fell with a sound no louder than a pin in moss. He carried the twig home unused, changed by the patience that had measured him.
