🎨 How to color it

Color the forklift safety orange, the pallet boxes kraft-paper brown, the chain-link fence silver gray, and the shed a weathered barn red. Use sharp colored pencils for the forklift mast, fence diamonds, tire rings, and pallet slats so the narrow lines stay crisp. Try adding dusty tan tire tracks behind the wheels and one bright blue label on a single box to make the load feel important.

Every afternoon, Quinn zipped the forklift through Brindle Yard, stacking pipe caps, paint cans, and crate after crate while the chain-link fence rattled in the wind. He always tapped the tiny brass bell tied under his dashboard before lifting a load; it had been his first lunch bell, back when the yard crew still shared sandwiches on old pallets. Until one day, a plain cardboard box slid from the scrap shelf with a soft thump and a smell of cinnamon.

Inside were twelve squashed apple pies, labeled WRONG ADDRESS in red marker. Because of that, Quinn tucked the box behind a stack of bricks instead of sending it to returns. Because of that, he heard the bridge repair crew grumbling beyond the shed, where their lunch cooler had been buried under wet tarps and one very proud raccoon. Quinn grinned, dinged his little bell once, and lifted the box onto his forks. “Strictly construction material,” he whispered.

He delivered it beside their tool buckets, then scooted away before anyone turned around. Finally, the crew found warm pie where they expected bolts, and laughter bounced off the metal racks. Next time you spot Quinn’s pallet of boxes, see if you can guess which one still smells like cinnamon.
