🎨 How to color it

Color the excavator sunshine yellow, the track treads charcoal gray, the bucket dusty orange, and the two bare trees soft brown. The cab windows and long hydraulic arms have simple spaces, so young colorers can use chunky crayons and stay inside the big outlines if they want. Try making the low hills pale green and the sky very light blue so the yellow excavator feels bright and brave.

Each morning, Orla rolled along the quiet hillside and patted the path smooth with her little front blade. She liked the soft scrape-scrape sound and the smell of dry grass. She wanted to make one neat path all the way to the bare tree, but she never used her deep bucket there. The ground felt too full of secrets.

Then one day, a silver root-thread peeked up and hummed like a tiny bell. Because of that, Orla stopped so fast her tracks clicked. Because of that, a field mouse popped out and whispered, “Please lift the hard clod, not the shining thread.” Orla’s scoop trembled. At last she lowered it, slow as sunset, and lifted just one brown lump away. Underneath, the root-light glowed on, safe and warm. Next time you see her bucket resting low, can you spot the place where Orla first heard the soft scrape-scrape sound?
