🎨 How to color it

Layer burnished orange on the excavator body, graphite gray on the bucket and tracks, pine green on the distant trees, and rusty copper on the scattered gears. Use sharp pencils and color one patterned panel at a time, following the boom’s long strips before tackling the tiny circles and cogs. Try a warm-to-cool shift across the arm, from golden near the bucket to deep sienna beside the cab, so the zentangle details feel like moving machinery.

Marlo’s Gear Beneath Noon — Every day, Marlo crossed Gearfield Pass at noon, teeth of his bucket clicking through scrap while hot pine sap scented the wind; he wanted the clang of the crew’s engine to match his own fast rhythm. Read the full story →

Every day, Marlo crossed Gearfield Pass at noon, teeth of his bucket clicking through scrap while hot pine sap scented the wind; he wanted the clang of the crew’s engine to match his own fast rhythm. Until one day the engine coughed silent. Because of that, the valley filled with frantic echoes; because of that, Marlo swung wide, scraping sparks from stones, and heard a bright tick where nobody checked: inside his bucket’s hollow rib. “There you are.” The hidden gear slid free, humming like it had always belonged there, and at noon Marlo clicked into the engine’s rhythm.
