Every evening, when the bricks of the little house held the sun’s last warmth, Liora watered the flower bed and listened for the bellflowers to ring. They never did. Drip, drip, pat went the watering can; hush, hush went the rake in the soil. “Maybe tomorrow,” she told the tulips, though her knees got dusty and the air smelled like wet leaves.
Until one day, no water came out. Because of that, Liora tipped the can and heard a tiny clink inside. Because of that, she peered into the spout, the last place anyone would search, and found a silver seed curled like a sleeping comma. She planted it beside the daisies and waited seven slow sunsets.
