🎨 How to color it

Try warm limestone beige for the mansion walls, slate gray for the striped roof, deep green for the topiary trees, and pale aqua for the fountain water. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny balcony scrollwork, windowpanes, roof lines, and brick walkway, coloring small sections before moving to the broad walls. For a playful touch, make the fountain glow with a light turquoise center while the many chimneys stay sooty charcoal at the tips.

Before breakfast, Bex carried a toolbox across the brick circle, clink-clank, with a brass fish tucked under one arm. He had hammered the fish from an old watering can, polished its grin with mint-scented soap, and planned to perch it on the courtyard fountain before the house guests came wandering out in slippers.

The mansion woke in pieces: chimneys sniffing out smoke, tall windows blinking gold, balcony railings cold as licorice. Bex tightened one screw, then another. The fish wobbled, winked in the sun, and spat one perfect splash. “Not bad for a can that used to dribble on radishes,” he said.

Then his dropped washer rolled under the fountain bowl. Bex reached after it and felt letters scratched into the stone where nobody ever looked: MIRA MADE THIS, AGE 10, PLUS ONE SECRET TADPOLE. Behind the letters sat a tiny clay tadpole, wearing a crooked crown. Bex laughed so hard the new fish jiggled. He set his brass fish beside it, added BEX MADE THIS, AGE 11, PLUS ONE NOISY FISH, and wiped the stone clean. Next time you pass the splashing fountain, listen for the proud little clink-clank hiding under the water.
