Every day, Nora counted the candles on the big number cake before anyone could sing. She tapped the table: tap, tap, no peeking, no puffing. Her new game was called Wait-for-Five, and nobody won until all five claps landed just right.
Until one day, a round sugar dot rolled off the frosting with a tiny plink. Because of that, Nora chased it with her party hat crooked. Because of THAT, the other sugar dots bounced after it like marbles, bump-bump-bump, while the candles leaned and wiggled. “Hold still, you sprinkle rascals!” Nora whispered.
At last she waited, hands in her lap, while the dots rolled back by themselves, tired and sweet-smelling. Five claps rang out. The flames shivered, the room laughed, and next time you spot the candles, you may hear Nora’s tap, tap, no peeking, no puffing.
