Every afternoon, Juniper trotted the city park loop with a bent blue bottle cap hidden under her collar. She planned to trade it to the pretzel cart pigeon, who accepted shiny things for dropped salt crumbs. Clip-clap went the leash, swish-swish went her tail, and the wooden bench always smelled like rain, shoes, and old sandwiches.
Until one day, no crumbs waited there. A squirrel sat on the bench arm, cheeks round as marbles, squeaking, “Emergency!” Because of that, Juniper forgot her own salty feast and followed the squirrel’s frantic tail to the lamppost. Because of THAT, she found three ducklings stuck beside a storm drain, peeping in the damp leaf muck while their mother quacked in circles.
Juniper nosed the bottle cap through the grate. It clinked down, plugged the little gap, and made a shiny step. Up hopped one duckling, then two, then three. Nobody cheered except the squirrel, who dropped one pretzel crumb behind the bench and winked. Next time you spot that empty bench, imagine the tiny clink of Juniper’s bent blue bottle cap.
