Every day after lunch, Koda stood at the start of the puddle path and counted the dry stones: one, two, three, stop. The garden smelled like wet leaves and peppery flowers, and the puddles shivered whenever rain tapped them. Koda wanted to reach the far bend where the white daisies nodded, but the first splash always sounded too big.
Until one day, a silver beetle rose from a puddle on a floating leaf and bowed with two thread-thin feelers. “Step when I click,” it said. Because of that, Koda lifted one boot as the beetle clicked tick-tick. Because of THAT, the puddle answered plink-plonk, not roar, and the umbrella hummed above him like a tiny drum.
At last Koda crossed to the daisies, leaving paw-shaped ripples behind. Next time rain dots the path, can you find the brave first splash where one, two, three became go?
