The back road hummed under the tires, and a puppy pressed his nose toward the crack of window air. Marlo wanted the curve ahead to feel like his own place, not just a ribbon pulling him farther from the yard. The wind smelled of clover, warm rubber, and far-off rain, but every bend made the car sigh, whooo, like it was keeping a secret.
At the longest curve, his paw slipped against the inside handle. Click. A tiny rolled map popped from the handle’s hollow, tied with blue thread and sprinkled with dust. On it, in paw-sized loops, someone had drawn every hill, fence, and cloud-shadow along the road. At the bottom were four words: Breathe here. You belong.
Marlo put his muzzle into the wind and barked one short, bright “Here!” The air rushed over the open glass and whistled back, not scary now, but welcoming. Ever since, country car windows whistle on bendy roads, reminding traveling pups when they have found their place—maybe you can spot the secret hollow by the handle before the next whooo.
