🎨 How to color it

Color the mother hen golden brown, her six chicks buttery yellow, the barn warm red, and the feed bucket bright blue. Use chunky crayons for the hen’s big body and the open barn boards, then switch to a sharper crayon point for the chicks’ tiny feet and beaks. Try making the smiling sun pale yellow in the middle and deeper orange around its little rays.

The story behind this coloring page

Lulu’s Sunbeam Parade — Beside the straw nest, Lulu tapped one claw in a warm stripe of light. Read the full story →

Beside the straw nest, Lulu tapped one claw in a warm stripe of light. She had just invented Sunbeam Parade, a game where every chick had to find a golden patch and peep when it tickled. “Peep when it warms your toes!” she called, and six tiny voices went pip-pip-pip.

The best sunbeam slid beyond the coop door, across the dusty yard. Lulu stepped out after it, past the scratchy hay, the clinking feed pail, and pebbles that poked her feet. The chicks waddled close behind. A soft wind smelled like grass and grain.

At the fence, the sunbeam spread wide enough for all of them. Lulu gave up the biggest spot so the smallest chick could stand in it. Then the joy grew too big for one hen. They paraded home, peeping it to the barn, the bucket, and the nest; can you find the warm stripe where Lulu first tapped one claw?
