🎨 How to color it

Color the duck soft white with a sunny orange bill, make the cattails cocoa brown, and give the arched bridge a warm cedar shade. Use the side of a green crayon for the long reed leaves, then switch to a sharper point for the bridge rails and the duck’s feather lines. Try pale blue water with darker blue ripple rings around the duck so it looks like it just paddled past the cattails.

Every day, Vera dipped her orange bill into the farm pond and followed one silver ripple from the cattails to the little bridge. She liked how the water made soft plip-plip sounds and smelled of mud, grass, and cool shade. Until one day, the ripple stopped in the middle of the pond, and a round bubble rose beside her foot. “Who said hello?” Vera whispered.

Because of that, she paddled closer, and the bubble popped with a tiny tickle. Because of that, more bubbles made a dotted trail under the bridge, where the water looked green and secret. Vera followed them slowly, curious all the way to her tail feathers, until finally a small frog blinked from a wet stone and croaked, “I was practicing echoes.” Vera laughed so softly the cattails hardly shook. Next time you see the silver ripple by the bridge, can you guess which bubble might answer?
