Every afternoon, Zane counted the jingles from the ice cream truck and bought one cone for himself before the last note faded. He loved the cold snap of vanilla on his tongue and the way the truck smelled like sugar wafers and summer tires. Until one day, the driver’s bell gave a wobbly clang, and the freezer door stuck tight. Six cones were ready, but the kids on Maple Loop were still blocks away. Zane pointed to the sidewalk squares. “Cone Dash!” he shouted. “No running in the street, no drips past the cracks!”
Because of that, he became the first courier, skipping from square to square while the wafer cone chilled his palm. Because of that, kids popped out of yards, porches, and behind a bicycle to join the game, passing napkins, calling flavors, and guarding puddles of shade. At the corner, Zane stopped with one cone left and a grin too wide to keep. Finally, he handed it to the driver, who had missed his own treat all week. The bell rang clear again, and next time you spot that roof-high popsicle, listen for Zane counting the jingles.
