🎨 How to color it

Color the picnic basket honey brown, the checkered blanket sky blue and white, the watermelon slices rosy red with dark green rinds, and the mugs sunny yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the basket’s woven lines and the blanket grid, then switch to broader strokes for the grass around the blanket. Try making the loose leaves two July greens, with one tiny leaf colored gold as if it caught late-afternoon sun.

By the back fence, Jonah packed his July challenge: one bite on every blue square of the picnic blanket before the sun touched the tall oak. He added watermelon, two cups, and the little yogurt with the bent spoon. The basket handle creaked against his palm as he stepped into the meadow, where warm grass brushed his ankles and grasshoppers clicked like tiny castanets.

The first squares were easy. Then a soft wind lifted the napkin, rolled a leaf into his cup, and tipped one watermelon wedge onto the blanket with a wet plop. Jonah sighed. “That was square seventeen,” he whispered. He chased the napkin through sweet clover and came back with burrs on his socks, sticky fingers, and a new spot under a cloud that looked like a sleeping dog.

He stopped counting. He set the plates wherever they fit and poured an extra cup for the breeze. The meadow hummed around him, not waiting for him to finish anything. When he carried the lighter basket home, he kept one golden leaf in his pocket, and next time you find the open basket on the checkered blanket, you may know exactly which square let Jonah belong.
