Every day, Sienna clipped a tiny silver bike bell inside her medical bag before rolling to the ambulance corner. It had belonged to her little brother’s first bicycle, and its ding-a-ling sounded like sunshine bouncing off a spoon. She never used it at work—until one day the whole block went oddly gloomy after a delivery truck splashed mud across the annual chalk parade.
Because of that, kids stared at ruined dragons and rockets on the sidewalk. Because of that, even the pigeons seemed to waddle quieter, peck-pecking through gray puddles. Sienna opened her bag for bandages, bumped the hidden bell, and DING! A toddler snorted. DING-ding! A cyclist answered with his own bell. Soon a bus driver honked two polite toots, a dog barked in rhythm, and chalk dust flew as everyone redrew the parade bigger, sillier, and twice as bright.
“Again!” shouted the kids. Sienna rang the little bell until joy spilled down the curb like confetti; if you spot her bag by the crosswalk, keep an ear ready for that ding-a-ling.
