🎨 How to color it

Color the toucan’s bill sunshine yellow with an orange tip, its body glossy black and cream, the jungle leaves emerald and lime, and the round fruit guava pink. Use sharp colored pencils for the leaf veins, feather scallops, and tiny fruit spots, then switch to markers for the big bill and open body shapes. Try making the hanging vines a darker green than the broad banana leaves so the toucan feels tucked inside a secret rainforest layer.

The story behind this coloring page

Kestrel and the Glass Pit — Under the broad wet leaves, Kestrel tapped a dull glass pit against his branch: tik, tik, tik. Read the full story →

Under the broad wet leaves, Kestrel tapped a dull glass pit against his branch: tik, tik, tik. It had come from his first fruit feast, and now it hummed whenever mist crawled through the understory. Kestrel wanted to know why, so he tucked it inside his beak and hopped away from his safe fruit perch, past vines that smelled like pepper and flowers that dripped cold water down his back.

A green tree frog barred the next branch. “Pay the bridge,” she said. Kestrel gave her the smallest mango from his breakfast, and she pointed to a curtain of roots. Behind it, the pit buzzed so hard it rattled his tongue. He pressed it into a hollow in the bark. The tree answered with a low, rainy drum, and tiny seeds slid out, shining like cloudy beads.

Kestrel carried one bead home instead of the glass pit. When he set it beside the fruit, the leaves above whispered tomorrow’s shower before a single cloud appeared. If you ever spot a toucan near round jungle fruit, wonder what secret is tucked behind that enormous beak: tik, tik, tik.
